The five-zone method
Most garages fall into five functional zones. Organizing tools around zones (rather than types) is faster and easier to maintain.
- Bulk storage zone — seasonal items, sports equipment, large bins (highest, least accessed)
- Tool wall zone — frequently used hand tools and power tools (eye level)
- Workbench zone — active project space (waist level)
- Floor zone — vehicles, lawn equipment, large items (below 18 in.)
- Vertical zone — bicycles, ladders, long items (above 78 in.)
The 20-minute edit
- Pull everything to the middle of the floor
- Trash everything broken, missing, or duplicated
- Donate anything you have not used in 12 months
- Group remaining items into the five zones
- Build the storage you need — not before, only after you know what is left
When to call it done
If you can park a car in your garage with room to open both car doors, you are 80% of the way there. The other 20% is labels.
